An active presence on the Montreal Jazz scene since his arrival from Paris in 2009, guitarist Samuel Bonnet has always bridged multiple musical universes. His sound combines “luminous, meticulous technique” (Pan M 360) with “raw authenticity” (Jazz Infos France); it merges a mastery of the natural resonance of the classical guitar with the adventurous spirit of jazz improvisation.
After a pandemic-enforced hiatus, Bonnet chose to examine the way his relationship with time had been disrupted. Inspired by his experience travelling – where he discovered the Italian “slow life” and the Indian Ayurvedic tradition – he realized how much ‘hustle culture’ had undermined his sense of balance in life: he discovered that for him, slowness is the key to happiness.
With the help of his sensitive, like-minded trio mates Jonathan-Guillaume Boudreau and Simon Bergeron (with whom he recorded his acclaimed albums Hybride and Live! In Harmony) Bonnet has recorded an audacious new album called Slow. His ninth album as a leader explores the essential themes of childhood, family, nature, creativity, love, and the simple joy of the present moment.
For this new album, Bonnet invited a longtime friend and collaborator to join the party: Joe Magnarelli. “Mags” – as the veteran American jazz trumpeter is know – is widely celebrated for his warm, open tone and powerhouse time feel. His sound is built from a deep study of players like Charlie Parker and Kenny Dorham, but still remains distinctly his own. That artistry, combined with his decades of experience as an in-demand sideman and respected educator at Juilliard has earned him wide recognition among his peers. From their first encounter on Bonnet’s 2014 album DiaspoRapsodie, both musicians felt a strong connection. A few gigs in New York followed in 2015, but it took Bonnet ten years to finally bring Mags back to Montreal to record this beautiful new record.
