Bassist, composer, author, and educator Josh Cohen has performed on two Juno Award-nominated albums, earned 1st place in the NAMM 2020 PJB Solo Bass Competition, and built an international following through his innovative solo electric bass work. Long associated with extended techniques and the ability to create the sound of a full ensemble on a single instrument, Cohen turns his writing outward on We Are Home, his first ensemble recording as a leader.
“For years, solo bass allowed me to shape an entire musical world in my own hands,” Cohen says. “With We Are Home, I had to hand that world over — to let go, trust the ensemble, and allow the music to grow beyond what I could have imagined alone.”
Featuring a formidable ensemble of some of Canada’s most in-demand, forward-thinking jazz and creative music artists — Jeremy Ledbetter on piano and keyboards, Rob Christian on woodwinds, Lucian Gray on guitar, and Mateo Mancuso on drums — We Are Home places Cohen’s compositional voice inside a collective setting shaped by the instincts, choices, and distinct musical personalities of the band. Christian also served as producer, recording engineer, mixing and mastering engineer, and one of Cohen’s closest creative collaborators throughout the project, helping shape the album’s pacing, arrangements, textures, and final sonic identity.
The title We Are Home carries both personal and musical meaning. On one level, it reflects Cohen’s journey with his family from the United States, to Mexico, and eventually back to Canada — a period shaped by place, transition, family, and return. On another level, it speaks to a musical home: Cohen’s sense of belonging within the Toronto and Canadian jazz community, and the creative trust he felt making this music with this particular group of musicians.
