Vermont musical polymath Kyle Saulnier fuses the American musical vocabulary with modern orchestral techniques and industrial rock muscle. His music is lush and inventive(WNYC); “a Great American Songbook of another order(Downbeat Magazine.) His genre-bending compositions, arrangements, and orchestrations have been performed by the Metropole Orkest, the Westerlies, Osso String Quartet, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Salina Symphony, and many more.

Building on his strong body of work as leader of the  widely celebrated Awakening Orchestra, Saulnier returns  here under the mononym thèriot. The shift is both a nod of deference to his Acadian heritage, and in recognition  of the fact that the artist he was is no longer the artist he is today. Deeply personal and unapologetically vulnerable, the Other. is a collection of music that explores grief, depression, and the masks we wear while pretending that everything is okay.

On the Other., thèriot. fronts a hybrid ensemble of New York City heavyweights including Nadje Noordhuis (Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue), Andrew Gutauskas (Brass Against, Miho Hazama), and Samuel Quiggins (the Heartstrings Project, American Pops), alongside several leading members of Vermont’s creative music scene: Michael Chorney (Hadestown, Freeway Clyde), Matthew LaRocca (Freeway Clyde, Vermont Symphony), Brooke Quiggins (Vermont Symphony, Osso String Quartet), Jane Boxall (Bad Smell, Saturn People’s Sound Collective), and Daniel Ryan (the Dan Ryan Express, Madaila).

“Saulnier’s writing is focused and sure… this is music of clear conviction, matched by strong execution.”
