The Carn Davidson 9 (CD9) was formed in 2010 as a collaborative project between JUNO Award winning artists, trombonist William Carn and saxophonist Tara Davidson. This co-led ensemble is an opportunity for both artists to craft their original compositions for this chamber jazz instrumentation. With its seven wind instruments underpinned by acoustic bass and drums, CD9 is a dynamic and engaging ensemble that commands and entertains a live audience. From swing to Brazilian baião, CD9 performs a diverse and compelling repertoire of compositions by Carn and Davidson that is eclectic yet cohesive.
The Carn Davidson 9’s fourth studio album, Reverence, presents two new suites of music from co-leaders William Carn and Tara Davidson that pay tribute to some of their musical heroes and heroines.
William Carn’s Pan-American Suite is dedicated partly to his Latin heritage and his love of Brazilian music. Being part Costa Rican, Carn named the movement “Florencio” after his father, who was his first music teacher without even realizing it, thanks to his immense passion for music of all kinds. The other movements are inspired by the Brazilian composers Sérgio Mendes, Hermeto Pascoal, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, whose sense of melody, rhythm, and playfulness have been a lasting inspiration to Carn’s musical journey. Saudé!
Tara Davidson’s Saxophonists Suite is dedicated to Dick Oatts, Joshua Redman, Christine Jensen, and Kenny Garrett. These four contemporary Jazz saxophonists have all deeply influenced Davidson and given her immeasurable amounts of joy and inspiration through their extraordinary musicianship as saxophonists, improvisers, and composers. Davidson sought out to compose a movement for each of these saxophonists that would convey elements of their musical voice to the listener, while paying homage to them.
